The Schneehüenerstock-Flyer 6-person chairlift in the Andermatt-Gütsch-Oberalppass ski area will go into operation on 3 March 2018. After a week, the official inauguration and the initial opening of the continuous ski link from Andermatt to Sedrun will follow on 10 March 2018. This completes the first step of the continuous Andermatt-Sedrun ski link; the final step will follow in time for the start of the 2018/19 season.
Subject to the permit of The Swiss Federal Office of Transport, expected to receive on 2 march, the lift will commence operation on 3 March 2018. Starting 10 march the marked and secured but ungroomed yellow piste (freeride) will be open to advanced-level skiers. With this, the link between the two ski areas will become fully useable in one direction. The fully secured and prepared red piste towards Oberalppass will be ready for the winter season 2018/19. The precise opening times can be found at www.skiarena.ch.
The 35 six-seat chairs have hoods for weather protection. The lift can transport 1,600 people per hour, and in its final form will have a capacity of 2,000 passengers per hour. Measuring over 1,000 meters in length, the lift system has 10 masts. The mountain station is housed with in the same building as the mountain station of the 10-passenger gondola cableway «Schneehüenerstock-Express», which will run from Oberalppass to Schneehüenerstock starting winter 2018/19.
During the past few months, construction of the mountain station, at 2,600 meters a.s.l., had to be interrupted several times due to heavy snowfall and snowstorms. Dr. Peter Furger, Chief Project Manager of the Andermatt-Sedrun ski area link, praised the efforts of the employees of the involved companies: "Thanks to them, we are now able to put the Schneehüenerstock-Flyer into operation in spite of the difficult conditions."
The Schneehüenerstock-Flyer completes the series of improvements at SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun for the 2017/18 season. After the early start of the season on the Gemsstock in November, with the opening of three new restaurants, the nGütsch-Express gondola cableway new was opened on December 23, as a feeder from Andermatt train station directly to the Nätschen Gütsch-Schneehüenerstock ski area. Inaugurated at the same time were the new Lutersee-Flyer chairlift and the new middle station on Nätschen, with MATTI Family Restaurant and the children's area MATTI Kids Arena.
